How To Clean Faux Wood Blinds

If you want a complete clean of your white faux wood blinds, look no further. For years I dusted and wiped down blinds, which was time consuming and never fully effective. I went a different route this time: Soaking the blinds in the bathtub, and was amazed by the results! The blinds came out completely clean and noticeably brighter.

What you will need:

  • Powdered OxiClean
  • Dish Soap
  • Hand Held Shower Head (sprayer)
  • Step Stool or Ladder
  • Flat Head Screwdriver

Fill a bathtub halfway with luke warm water, a half scoop of OxiClean, and moderate squirt of dish soap – mix the water with your hand. This cleaning solution was designed for white blinds, but should work for darker wood colors too (disclaimer: I haven’t tried it yet)

Remove the blinds: pull blinds all the way to top, remove valance (if there is one), and open brackets with a flat head screwdriver. If your blinds are tall like mine, then you may need a good step stool or 6′ ladder, the blinds will be heavier than you expect.

Soak the blinds and valances in the bathtub mixture for several hours. The pull strings may tangle in tub, so limit the amount of blinds to 3-4 sets at a time, and keep strings separated in tub. You will be surprised by the amount of dirt expelled, these things are dust collectors.

After soaking, stand the blinds up vertically in the tub and RINSE THOROUGHLY with the hand held shower head. This is important step, not rinsing thoroughly will leave spots on blinds. Let dry in the tub for a couple hours, towel dry any reaming water.

Hang blinds back up and add valances. Enjoy your clean room.

Warning: do not use bleach! It will eat through the blind strings, OxiClean and dish soap will take care of the dirt and grease.
